PENGUINS
Penguins are birds, but they are
unlike other birds in several ways. Their wings are flippers, and they cannot
fly in the air. Penguins do, however, “fly” in the water, at speeds up to 30
miles (48 kilometers) an hour. While swimming, they can dive with a thrust of
their flippers and travel 30 feet (9 meters) underwater before surfacing. They
surface with such force that they may soar into the air, like porpoises. Some
can leap cut of the water onto a ledge 7 feet (2 meters) above the surface.
On
land, penguins use their flippers for fighting and for balancing as they walk.
Penguins waddle slowly along, standing up straight like a person. When
traveling over snow and ice, they may flop on their bellies and “row” with
their feet. They also use their flippers when in a great hurry. This way of
travelling is called tobogganing.
